I have made many friends through travel. Pooja Singh in India, Karen Starling and her mum, Zoe, who, after we met on an excellent Cosmos coach tour, introduced me to the joys of Calcutta and which, like Madras, where I found I had cousins, is like a second home. I am immensely grateful to my cousins, the Subramanians, for putting me up as a wide-eyed twenty one year old and giving me a view of life outside of the cities: they were probably lucky to find me as, so frightened by the vast number of people outside Madras Airport on my arrival and overcome by the heat, I fled inside again and had to be coaxed out. I have improved since... |
There has also been the occasional trip away from the office, the most exciting being a trip on Concorde. It was ironic and sad when, on my debut scoring for the B.B.C at Lord's, that Concorde should crash at Paris and hasten the end of this remarkable aircraft's flying days. I feel tremendously lucky to have been able to fly on it. |
