for a Where Eagles Dare exhibition in Ebensee and that one of the gents would contact me albeit not in the immediate future after my stay. Sadly, I haven’t heard but there are no doubts in my mind that these gentlemen were very kind-hearted and well-meaning – it improved my German too.
Feuerkogel cable car
One of the original cable cars used in the film at the top of the Feuerkogel
One of the cable cars is almost a museum at the top of the Feuerkogel and easily found. Sadly, it has not been well maintained. But what of the other, I asked? Someone bought it and it is housed – and better maintained – in this person’s garden. Head out in front of the valley cable car station, turn left after, if my memory serves me correctly, the car park, take the path up for a short distance and there it is.
Onto Lofer, maybe an hour or so from Salzburg by reasonably regular bus and also from the Airport, to stay in the Haus Egger hotel. Zum Wilden Hirsch. This has been recently refurbished and is wonderful: rooms come from around 35 euros and are superb, the charming owner, Claudia, was very helpful and photos of the film adorn the walls. Other areas of interest include the road from where the bus careers down on its precarious way to Oberhausen Airfield – an area I have yet to visit – and parts of this quaint town can be easily recognised.
