The photos might give an idea of what to expect. The bare fact is that the plateau of Preikestolen is 604 metres above the Lysefjorden and it’s a sheer drop presumably not for the faint-hearted and for those of vertiginous bent. I’m not the greatest with heights but, inevitably, curiosity got the better of me and I inched forward to within about three feet of the edge before feeling obliged to sit down and peer round to see if anyone was watching my unease… But, no, I didn’t lie flat out and look over at the fjord 2000 feet below. It was pretty windy for good measure but this was a magnificent excursion. I have seen many wonderful sights in Switzerland but this trip to Preikestolen will take a lot of beating. Stavanger by dayThe little of Norway I have seen has whet my appetite to go higher up to the Arctic Circle and another memorable event was having my first £10 pint of beer. I felt more comfortable later with a 25p can of Asda beer but it wasn’t quite as good and there was no way I was spilling or dropping any of the more expensive variety…
