The return to Alesund was a series of buses and a very small ferry and included a photo stop at Ornesvigen ( The Eagle's Bend) with further dramatic views over the Geirangerfjord. The three hour return trip was again excellent value at around £25 through Fjord 1. Six of us then ended up at the Radisson Blu again and one American lady entrusted me with getting her there which I told her was brave considering how bad I am with directions usually. She quickly realised this and, when I tried as confidently as possible to go one way, she immediately asked a local for assistance. Guess who was wrong?
Although my holiday might have ended the following morning at Gatwick when the Norwegian flight arrived a few minutes early at 10.30am, it was in fact the start of a memorable day enjoying the final day celebrations of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee. After leaving my bag at the very friendly and efficient Left Luggage at Victoria Station, I walked to Buckingham Palace, up The Mall before settling on Westminster. Had I just opted for the Big Ben side of the lawn rather than the Abbey side, I would have had an even better view of the start of the carriage procession but, for all that, the pomp and sheer enjoyment of the crowd made for a very special day and I am immensely pleased to have been there. The understandably vast police presence was friendly and it was a lovely atmosphere. View from Ornesvingen, Geirangerfjord
