SRI LANKA VS. ENGLAND SECOND TEST HIGHLIGHTS, GALLE

Congratulations to England on their 2-0 series victory against Sri Lanka. Below are some of the Second Test highlights.
  • Sri Lanka's first innings 381 is their second-highest total after losing their first two wickets before reaching 10. Their highest in such circumstances is 384 against Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2008-09.
  • Sri Lanka's total is also their second-highest with a minimum of four batsmen passing fifty with three also making ducks. In 2002-03 at Colombo (PSS), they made 483 against New Zealand.
  • Niroshan Dickwella's 92 is his highest Test score. His aggregate, after this innings, was 2156 runs and places him second with most runs without scoring a century having surpassed Chetan Chauhan (2084, average 31.58). Only Shane Warne (3154 runs, average 17.33) lies ahead.
  • For the first time in a Test in Sri Lanka since 2001, all ten wickets in an innings fell to the quicker bowlers. On that occasion, England bowled Sri Lanka out at Kandy for 297.
  • James Anderson's 6 for 40 is the best bowling by a quick bowler at Galle and the second-best by a visiting fast bowler in Sri Lanka. Waqar Younis's 6 for 34 at Kandy in 1994-95 is the only better performance.
  • Joe Root's 186 is the third-highest score by a captain to end run out. Dudley Nourse's 208 for South Africa against England at Trent Bridge in 1951 and Sir Alastair Cook's 190 for England against India at Kolkata in 2012-13 are the only higher scores.
  • This is the second occasion of Root being run out in successive innings, the same happening against West Indies in 2020.
  • During his innings, Root jumped from 29th to 26th in the all-time pantheon of highest Test scorers, overtaking three England batsmen, Sir Geoffrey Boycott (8114), Kevin Pietersen (8181) and David Gower (8231).
  • Root's 426 runs (average 106.50) in the series is the sixteenth best for a two-match series. As a captain, though, Root's aggregate is third-highest behind Brendon McCullum (535 runs, average 133.75 against India in 2013-14) and Mahela Jawayardene (510 runs, average 170 against South Africa in 2016).
  • Lasith Embuldeniya's 7 for 137 is the fifth best innings analysis at Galle. The best is Muttiah Muralitharan's 7 for 46 against England in 2003-04.
  • Lahiru Thirimanne became the thirteenth fielder (excluding wicket-keepers) and first from Sri Lanka to take five catches in an innings.
  • For the first time the same combination (ct Thirimanne b Embuldeniya) of fielder (not wicket-keeper) and bowler resulted in the same dismissal five times in one Test innings. Jermaine Blackwood took four catches from Kraigg Brathwaite for West Indies against Sri Lanka at Colombo (PSS) in 2015-16.
  • The partnership of 97 between Root and Jos Buttler is England's highest for the fifth wicket in Sri Lanka. The previous best was 89 between Buttler and Ben Stokes at Colombo (SSC) in 2018-19.
  • Several England players have found their nemeses against Sri Lankan bowlers. Jack Leach has fallen to Dilruwan Perera in his last five innings (against Sri Lanka), Zak Crawley the last four times and Dom Sibley in three successive innings, both to Embuldeniya.
  • Embuldeniya's 40 in Sri Lanka's second innings is the second occasion of a Sri Lankan number 10 top scoring in a Test innings.
  • The Sri Lankan second innings saw the second time where all ten Sri Lankan wickets fell to slow bowlers in Sri Lanka. The previous occasion was at Pallekele in 2018-19 and England have achieved the feat on both occasions.
  • For the first time in Tests, a team (England) took all ten wickets in one innings through their fast bowlers and all ten to their slow bowlers in the other.
  • Anderson's first innings dismissal of Thirimanne is the eighth occasion that he has dismissed Thirimanne. Thirimanne is the third Sri Lankan batsman to be dismissed by the same bowler on eight occasions and the list is headed by Mahela Jayawardene who was dismissed by Saeed Ajmal ten times.
  • Embuldeniya's 10 for 210 in the match is the fifteenth-best match analysis at Galle.
  • For the first time at Galle, Sri Lanka lost successive Tests. England's third victory at the ground (in seven Tests) makes them the most successful visiting team overtaking the two victories by Australia (in four Tests) and Pakistan and India (five Tests each).
