  • Sri Lanka's 135 is their second-lowest total at Galle, behind only 105 against Australia in 2011. It is also the lowest, first innings of a Test total on the ground, the previous lowest being their 181 against Pakistan in 1999-2000.
  • The difference of 224 runs between the second and first Sri Lankan innings is their fifth-highest in Tests played in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's record in such circumstances is 263 against Pakistan at Colombo (SSC) in 2005-06.
  • Dom Bess's 5 for 30 is England's fifth-best innings analysis in Sri Lanka and second best at Galle. John Emburey's 6 for 33 at Colombo (PSS) in 1981-82 and Graeme Swann's 6 for 82 at Galle in 2011-12 are the respective best.
  • Bess's match analysis of 8 for 130 is England's best at Galle bettering Ashley Giles's 8 for 132 in 2003-04.
  • England's first innings lead of 286 is the fifth highest at Galle. Pakistan's lead of 419 in 1999-2000 remains the best, slightly ahead of Sri Lanka's 418 over England in 2007-08.
  • Joe Root's 228 is the highest score by a captain at Galle surpassing Mahela Jayawardene's unbeaten 213 against England in 2007-08. Root's eighteenth Test hundred is also his second highest and seventh (and highest) as captain.
  • Root's innings is also the longest (in time) by an England player in Sri Lanka beating the previous best of 448, jointly held by Michael Vaughan at Kandy in 2003-04 and Robin Smith at Colombo (SSC) in 1992-93.
  • In his 98th Test, Root became the seventh England player and thirty-first in total to score 8000 Test runs.
  • Kusal Mendis became the thirtieth player, and third Sri Lankan, to register four consecutive ducks. The record stands at five, a fate Mendis avoided by scoring 15 in the second innings.
  • Angelo Mathews became the fifth Sri Lankan player to score 6000 Test runs.
  • Dan Lawrence became the 77th England player to score a fifty in a Test debut innings. His 73 places him at joint 26th with Joe Root who made the same score against India at Nagpur in 2012-13.
  • The partnership of 173 between Root and Lawrence is also England's best for any wicket in Sri Lanka.
  • For the second consecutive Test between the two countries, both wicket-keepers were caught by their opposite number.
