Second Test Highlights England vs. India, Edgbaston

  • Shubman Gill became the fourth Indian captain to register centuries in his first two Tests as captain after Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli scored centuries in both innings of his first Test as captain and a further century in his next Test as captain after a gap when he was just a player.. Gavaskar's feat actually came almost three years after his first Test as captain.
  • Gill's first two Tests as captain have yielded 565, the most by any new captain. The next two highest are also Indian captains, Kohli (449) and Gavaskar (429).
  • Gill's 269 is the second-highest, first-innings-of-a match total by a captain who lost the toss and whose team was inserted. The highest was also between England and India: Graham Gooch scored 333 at Lord's in 1990.
  • Gill's score is the highest for India against England in England which surpasses Sunil Gavaskar's 221 at The Oval in 1979.
  • Gill's score is also the highest by an Indian captain overtaking Kohli's unbeaten 254 against South Africa at Pune in 2019-20.
  • Possibly surprisingly, Gill's score is only the fifth highest at Edgbaston and the third-highest by a captain. Sir Alastair Cook's 294 against India in 2011 is the highest by a player whilst Peter May's unbeaten 285 against West Indies in 1957 is the best by a captain.
  • Based on the total at the loss of their fifth wicket (211) or fewer, India's recovery to 587 (376 runs) is their highest for the last five wickets against all nations. Previously, they added 370 (83-5 to 453) against West Indies at Kolkata in 2013-14.
  • India's 587 is significantly the highest first innings total by an inserted team at Edgbaston. The previous highest was England's 462 against South Africa in 1998.
  • It is also India's second-highest, first-innings-of-a-match total after being inserted. Their 610 for 3 against Bangladesh at Mirpur in 2007 heads their list.
  • England's decision to insert India at Headingley and Edgbaston resulted in a combined total of 1058 runs over India's two first innings. Other examples of teams winning the toss in successive Tests within the same series and electing to field first resulted in the following totals:
    # Bangladesh vs. South Africa in 2017-18 496-3 dec & 573-4 dec (Combined 1069)
    # New Zealand vs. Australia in 2001-02 486-9 dec & 558-8 dec (Combined 1044)
    # West Indies vs. New Zealand in 2013-14 609-9 dec & 441 (Combined 1050)
    # West Indies vs. South Africa in 2014-15 552-5 dec & 417-8 dec (Combined 969)
    # West Indies vs. New Zealand in 2020-21 519-7 dec & 460 (Combined 979)
    # Pakistan vs. England in 1962 428 & 428-5 dec (Combined 856)
  • In successive matches but over two series, Bangladesh inserted New Zealand (553-7 dec) before putting in England in the next series (599-6 dec), both in 2009-10 and thus conceded an alarming 1152 runs over the two Tests.
  • The partnership of 203 between Gill and Ravindra Jadeja is only India's third highest for the sixth wicket against England. The highest (222) was also made at Edgbaston, in 2022 between Jadeja and Pant.
  • For their first time, England recorded six ducks in an innings. There have been eight previous occasions in Test history.
  • Ben Stokes's first-ball dismissal in the first innings is his first golden duck in Tests.
  • England's 407 is the highest, completed total which has included six ducks. It surpasses Bangladesh's 365 against Sri Lanka at Mirpur in 2022. Bangladesh's innings is similar to England's in that, in addition to the six ducks, there were also two centuries with the third-highest score being extras with 17.
  • Jamie Smith's unbeaten 184 is the highest score by an England wicket-keeper overtaking Alec Stewart's 173 against New Zealand at Auckland in 1996-97.
  • The last occasion that England had similar collapses in the same innings from 0 to 5 wickets and 5 to 10 (omitting the sixth-wicket partnership) was at Ahmedabad in 2020-21 where they lost their first wickets for 81 and their last five for 31.
  • The partnership of 303 between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith is the highest for the sixth wicket for England against India. The previous highest was 189 between Chris Woakes and Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in 2018.
  • The partnership is the fifth-highest at Edgbaston for any wicket. The Peter May & Colin Cowdrey partnership of 411 for England against West Indies in 1957 leads the way.
  • England's 407 is the lowest, completed total to include a partnership of 300 or more. The previous lowest was 431 by West Indies against Australia at Kingston, Jamaica in 1998-99.
  • Mohammad Siraj's 6 for 70 is the second-best analysis for India at Birmingham behind only Chetan Sharma's 6 for 58 in 1986.
  • The Test saw only the second occasion of both teams each having a 200+ sixth-wicket partnership in the same match. The other time was between India and Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad in 2009-10.
  • For the first time since 1980-81 at the former Bombay, an Indian team's opening pair took all ten England wickets in the same innings. On that occasion, Kapil Dev and Madan Lal dismissed England in their second innings for 102.
  • It is also the fifth such occasion at Edgbaston, the last occasion being for England against South Africa in 1924.
  • In adding 161 in the second innings, Gill made 430 runs in the match. This is the second highest aggregate by one player and only Graham Gooch (456, vs. India at Lord's in 1990) has made more.
  • Gill also became the first player to make scores of 250+ and 150+ in the same Test.
  • Gill became the seventeenth captain to record centuries in both innings of a match and is the third Indian captain to do so. For other nations, Ricky Ponting performed the feat on three occasions. Gill is the tenth captain to achieve the feat away from home.
  • Gill's match aggregate is the highest in a Test by a number 4. Greg Chappell had previously made 380 (247* and 133) for Australia against New Zealand at Wellington in 1973-74.
  • For the first time in his career, Ravindra Jadeja scored a fifty in both innings of a Test.
  • Shoaib Bashir conceded the third-most number of runs (286) in a Test for England. Roly Jenkins (290, vs. West Indies at Lord's in 1950) and Doug Wright (288, vs. South Africa at Durban in 1938-39) are the only ones ahead of him.
  • India's match aggregate of 1014 runs is the fourth highest by any team. The highest is 1121 by England against West Indies at Kingston in 1929-30. There have been only six occasions of a team scoring 1000 or more runs in the same Test.
  • For the third time against England, India recorded seven scores of 50 or more in a Test. The other occasions were at Trent Bridge in 2014 and at The Oval in 2007.
  • Akash Deep's 10 for 187 in the match is the eighth occasion of a bowler taking ten or more wickets in an Edgbaston Test. His figures are narrowly the best by an Indian bowler surpassing Chetan Sharma's 10 for 188 in 1986.
  • Jamie Smith's 272 runs in the match is the most by an England wicket-keeper in a Test overtaking Alec Stewart's 204 against South Africa at Old Trafford in 1998.Smith joins Alan Knott and Matt Prior (on three occasions) in scoring a century and a fifty in the same Test. No England wicket-keeper has yet scored centuries in both innings of the same Test.
  • Smith's aggregate is the most by an England wicket-keeper against India and second overall behind only Andy Flower's 287 for Zimbabwe at Nagpur in 2000-01.
  • India's win is their first at Edgbaston in nine Tests.
  • India's 336-run victory is their largest by runs against England in England and their second-highest overall. Their previous best was by 279 runs at Headingley in 1986.
  • Their victory is their tenth in England in 69 Tests.
  • The match aggregate of 1692 runs is the biggest between England and India overtaking the 1673 at Headingley in the current series.
  • This aggregate is significantly the highest at Edgbaston beating the 1372 between England and West Indies in 2004.
  • India's win is the fifteenth-largest by runs by a side which lost the toss and was inserted. Bangladesh's win by 546 runs against Afghanistan at Mirpur in 2023 is the highest.
  • The victory margin is also England's third heaviest by runs after winning the toss and inserting the opposition. New Zealand's 423-run victory at Hamilton last year remains the highest.
  • The ten fifties in the match is the second most at Edgbaston behind only the eleven between England and Pakistan in 2016.
  • England's seven ducks in the match equals their most made on five other occasions. The last occasion was at Lord's in 2021, also against India.
