Second Test Highlights Australia VS. England, Brisbane

  • Ben Duckett joined Colin Cowdrey as the last England number 2 to be dismissed first ball in the first over of a Test against Australia. Cowdrey did so at The Oval in 1956.
  • Zak Crawley's first innings 76 is the highest score by an opener against Australia following a pair in the previous Test. The previous highest was Devon Smith's 59 for West Indies at Bridgetown in 2002-03 whilst, in Australia, the highest was Rajindra Chandrika's 25 for West Indies at Hobart in 2015-16.
  • The only other occasion that England's numbers 2 and 3 failed to score whilst the numbers 1 and 4 scored over fifty was also against Australia, at Adelaide, in 1990-91.
  • Joe Root's first century in Australia is his fortieth in total, a total achieved only by Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45) and Ricky Ponting (41).
  • The four ducks in England's first innings is their thirteenth such occasion in Australia. They have only once had more in an innings (5) at The Oval in 1956.
  • The partnership of 70 between Root and Jofra Archer is England's tenth highest for the tenth wicket against Australia and the seventh highest in Australia. The record for both is 130 between Reg Foster and Wilfred Rhodes at Sydney in 1903-04.
  • Archer's 38 is the seventh highest score by a number 11 against Australia and the fourth highest in Australia. The highest is 49* by Andy Caddick at Birmingham in 2001 whilst the top score in Australia is William Attewell's 43* at Adelaide in 1891-92.
  • There have been several occasions of an Australian bowler taking five or more wickets in one innings of a Test followed by a similar performance in the next Test against England but Mitchell Starc became one of only three to take seven or more wickets in an innings in one Test followed by six in either the next or preceding Test. The others were Shane Warne in 1994-95 and Hugh Trumble in 1902.
  • The last occasion that an Australian side had 50+ partnerships for the first four wickets against England was also at Brisbane, in 2006-07.
  • Australia's 511 is their highest, completed total against England not to include a century. Previously, their 476 at Adelaide in 1911-12 was their highest.
  • Australia's first innings saw the sixteenth occasion of all eleven players reaching double figures. This was Australia's third such occasion but their first time against England.
  • Australia's 511 is the second-highest total where all eleven players have reached double figures but with none making a century. The highest is India's 524 for nine against New Zealand at Kanpur in 1976-77. There have been six such instances.
  • The six instances have all seen Extras reach double figures also.
  • The Australian first innings saw Australia's twentieth occasion of five or more fifties in the same innings against England but their first at Brisbane.
  • Starc's 77 in the Australian first innings is the second-highest score by an Australian number 9 top scoring against England. Clem Hill's 160 at Adelaide in 1907-08 leads the way (although this was the lowest position that he batted for Australia having batted in every position from 3 to 9).
  • Starc became the second Australian player after Hugh Trumble at The Oval in 1902 to top score in a Test with a score of over 50 and have the best innings bowling analysis (min.6 wickets) for Australia against England.
  • Starc joined Charlie Turner (from 1887), Trumble (from 1902) and Terry Alderman (in 1981) in taking eight or wickets in two successive Ashes Tests.
  • Australia recorded their joint-highest number of fifty partnerships (6) in an innings against England. The only other occasion was also at Brisbane, in 2006-07. It is their fifth such occasion against all opposition. The record by any team is eight by India against England at The Oval in 2007.
  • The only comparable occasion of England scoring a similar number of ducks to Australia's fifties in the first innings of an Ashes Test was at Headingley in 2009 when England scored four ducks to Australia's four fifties.
  • Michael Neser became the thirteenth Australian bowler to take two or more wickets caught & bowled in the same innings against England. The last occasion was Mitchell Starc at Adelaide in 2017-18. The record by any country is three (George Giffin for Australia vs. England at Sydney in 1891-82 and Billy Barnes for England vs. Australia at Melbourne in 1884-85).
  • Alex Carey joined Australian wicket-keepers Ian Healy, Adam Gilchrist and Brad Haddin in taking a minimum of seven catches and scoring a fifty during the same Ashes Test.
  • Steve Smith went past Greg Chappell's record of most catches in Ashes Tests (61) and now stands on 66. The most by an England player is 57 by Sir Ian Botham.
  • Smith also stands level with Rahul Dravid (210) with only Joe Root (213) above him.
  • Australia's day/night Test record now stands at 15 matches with 14 wins and only one defeat.
