SOUTH AFRICA vs. ENGLAND Centurion Park First Test Highlights |
|
|
|
- Dean Elgar became the twenty-eighth batsman to fall to the first ball of a Test. He is the fourth South African to suffer the fate, and also the tenth batsman to fall to the first ball of a series. Sunil Gavaskar and Bangladesh's Hannan Sarkar suffered the indignity three times each, Sarkar falling on all three occasions to the same bowler, West Indian Pedro Collins.
- James Anderson became the ninth cricketer and second for England (after Sir Alastair Cook) to play 150 Tests. The only other pace bowler to achieve this feat is South Africa's all-rounder, Jacques Kallis.
- Quinton de Kock became the fifth South African wicket-keeper to take six catches in a Test innings. Mark Boucher achieved the feat on four occasions.
- de Kock's is the third time that the feat has been achieved at Centurion Park, Boucher performing it on the previous two occasions.
- England's first-innings 181 is their lowest total against South Africa to include two fifty partnerships. Their previous lowest was 183 at Cape Town in 1923. It is not, though, the lowest total at Centurion Park to include two fifty partnerships, Sri Lanka making 180 all out in 2011-12.
- Jofra Archer's 5 for 102 in South Africa's second innings is the best by an England bowler at Centurion Park. The previous best was Graeme Swann's 5 for 110 in 2009/10.
- Anrich Nortje's 40 in South Africa's second innings is the ninth-highest score by a South African nightwatchman. It is also the highest score by a nightwatchman at Centurion Park, surpassing Ishant Sharma's 23 for India in 2010-11.
- England's opening partnership of 92 in the second innings between Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley is their highest at Centurion Park. The previous best in five previous Tests was just 28 between Michael Atherton and Mark Butcher in 1999/2000.
- For the second time in a Centurion Park Test, de Kock scored over 100 runs and took eight catches.
- de Kock's feat above is the eighth such occasion by a wicket-keeper in a Test. de Kock is the only wicket-keeper to achieve the feat twice.
- The 31 wickets to fall to catches is the most in a Centurion Park Test. There have been two occasions in 2005/06 and 2017/18 where 28 batsmen fell to catches.
- In winning their sixth consecutive Test at Centurion Park, South Africa set a record at the ground. They had previously won five between 11 March 2005 and 28 November 2008. The current streak started on 17 December 2014. Only at Cape Town does South Africa have a longer successive winning streak with seven.
- South Africa have now won 20 of their 25 Tests at Centurion Park.
- England have lost their last seven wickets for fewer than the 64 runs (and 39 in the first innings) in both innings of a Test in only 16 of their previous 1018 Tests.
