  • The 107-run stand between Zak Crawley and Dominic Sibley's is England's first opening century stand overseas since Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings made 103 in Chennai against India in 2016/17.
  • England's first innings is their twenty-third occasion of scoring 400 or more without an individual century. Their 490 for 8 against West Indies at Headingley in 2017 is their highest.
  • The said total is the second-highest without a century at Wanderers. The highest is New Zealand's 411 in 1994/95.

  • The Broad and Wood partnership is the second highest for the tenth wicket for England against South Africa. The highest remains 92 between Charles Albert George "Jack" Russell and Arthur Gilligan at Durban in 1922/23.
  • Joe Root's single from the second ball of the fifty-second over made England the first side to score 500,000 Test runs. In second place are Australia (432,706 runs in 323 innings fewer).
  • Beuren Hendricks became the 24th South African cricketer to take five wickets in an innings on debut. Seventeen players have achieved the feat in the first innings, six in the second whilst one, Sydney Burke, did so in both innings against New Zealand at Cape Town in 1961/62.
