FOUR-DAY TESTS?
The recent announcement that the E.C.B. cautiously supports four-day Tests is, in my opinion, a shame but not entirely surprising. For a while now, many Tests have not lasted the distance and I list below some, I hope, salient statistics below of the duration of Tests in 2019. There were 39 Tests in 2019 against 48 in 2018, the World Cup presumably being one reason for the lesser number last year.
As a great fan of Test cricket, I would be sad to see the format reduced. Ireland played a Test at Lord's which was slated for four days only, with one day being lost to the weather for good measure. An extraordinary match saw both England and Ireland bowled out in one innings each for fewer than 100.
Four-day Tests may apparently contain 98 overs per day. Given that there are many occasions that, even with the extra but apparently now mandatory half-hour added on, 90 overs cannot be completed, one wonders where 98 will come from.
It is a shame to me that gripping finales with spectators on the edge of their seats are so rare these days. Which other sport can boast a result where there is no winner over five days? Where, at the end of five days, is it sometimes possible that can we feel such expectation as the match reaches an exciting denouement? As some of the figures below may show, large totals are more often rare whilst small totals became ever more apparent. There were two Tests in 2019 where all forty wickets fell, with no innings lasting longer than ninety overs.
Against this apparent doom, there were many notable batting performances. David Warner overtook Mark Taylor's and Sir Donald Bradman's record individual Australian score whilst 72 centuries were scored, including eleven of 200 or more. There was also the thrill of two one-wicket wins after the victorious side had required over 70 runs with their last pair at the wicket. There were also eight partnerships of over 250, with three going beyond 300.
Nathan Lyon's toil through 344 balls (57.2 overs) was the most by a bowler in 2019. In the pantheon of long and, in some cases, historic innings bowling analyses, his fits in at joint 262 in Test cricket. Let those who love Test cricket, like myself, hope that the longest and most historic format will be retained over five days. Many of us, I am sure, see the reason and need for quick-fire cricket but let us hope that it is not at the expense of the traditional form of the game, or its length.
