New Zealand VS. England First Test Highlights, Mount Maunganui

  • Although there have been ample occasions of first-day declarations in Tests, it appears that England's first innings is the first where an inserted team has declared. The closest is New Zealand's 452 for 9 against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2005 after which they declared overnight. This is based upon a full day's play on the first scheduled day of the match.
  • England's first innings contained just one maiden over, the second-fewest in the first innings of a Test. There were none in the South Africa vs. England Durban Test (not the final Timeless Test) in 1938-39.
  • For the first time since February 2020, Kane Williamson failed to reach double figures in both innings of the same Test. This was at Christchurch against India after which his next four scores were 251, 129, 21 and 238.
  • In scoring 83 and 54 in this his fifth Test, Harry Brook took his tally to 623 runs, the most by any England player after five Tests. Previously, Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji held the record with 599 runs. The record by any player is Sunil Gavaskar (831, average 118.71) with Brook standing third.
  • The 699 runs in the match by England is their third-highest match aggregate without containing a century. Their highest is 753 (vs. Australia at Adelaide in 1932-33) followed by 742 (vs. Pakistan at Edgbaston in 2016).
  • There have now been three occasions of two debutants on the same side who did not bowl a maiden over between them in their first innings (based on a minimum six overs per bowler). The previous occasions were for West Indies against Australia at Georgetown in 1977-78 and for England against Australia at Sydney in 2013-14.
  • Mark Blundell became the seventh wicketkeeper - and third from New Zealand - to score a hundred and take five dismissals in one innings in the same Test. The other New Zealand players to do so are Ian Smith and B-J. Watling. Jonny Bairstow has performed the feat twice.
  • In adding 223 runs for their last five wickets, New Zealand's first innings 306 is their second-best recovery against England. This is based on losing their first five wickets for fewer than 100 runs. Their highest recovery is 242 at Christchurch in 2017-18 when they made 278 after being 36 for 5.
  • Stuart Broad became the sixth England bowler to bowl out four New Zealand players in the same innings. The record is six by Bill Bowes during his 6-34 at Auckland in 1932-33.
  • England's second innings contained four 50-run partnerships, their thirteenth occasion of four (or more) in New Zealand. The last was also at Mount Maunganui, in 2019-20 when they made five.
  • England's second innings 374 is their highest, completed total in a Test when the highest scorer has made fewer than 60. Their previous highest was 339 against West Indies at Kingston in 2003-04 when Mark Butcher's 58 was the top score.
  • For the eighth time in their Test history, New Zealand lost their first five wickets in both innings of the same Test for under 100 runs. It is their second occasion against England, the previous occasion being at Lord's in 1958. It is also only their second occasion in New Zealand, the last time being at Wellington against Australia in 1945-46.
  • Blair Tickner became the sixth New Zealand player to bowl a minimum of 20 overs in a debut Test without bowling a maiden over. There have been 28 such occasions by all countries with the most notable being Sir Richard Hadlee and Dennis Lillee.
  • Neil Wagner's economy rate (6.55) is the second-highest by a New Zealander bowler with Michael Bracewell's 7.30 (vs. England at Leeds in 2022) the only higher. This is based upon bowling a minimum of 10 overs in the match.
  • For the sixteenth time in their Test history, fifties were scored in the same innings by England's numbers five, six and seven. The last occasion was also against New Zealand, at Lord's in 2015.
  • Daryl Mitchell became the fifth quickest (by innings) to score 1000 runs for New Zealand. He scored the runs in his 23rd innings. The quickest was set by his team-mate, Devon Conway, in 19 innings.
  • James Anderson and Stuart Broad became the most successful combination of bowlers overtaking the earlier record of Shane Warne and McGrath (1001).
  • New Zealand bowled just six maidens in the match, their lowest ever. Their previous fewest was seven against Pakistan at Lahore in 1976-77.
  • For the second time in Mount Maunganui Tests, New Zealand lost five players bowled in one innings.
  • England's 267-run victory is their largest by runs against New Zealand surpassing their 247-run win at Leeds in 2013.
