HIGHLIGHTS OF ENGLAND VS WEST INDIES FIRST TEST

First of all, it is wonderful to see some cricket after a lengthy break. Many thanks to the West Indian team for coming over to tour during the pandemic and give cricket fans some action. There may not be spectators at the Ageas Bowl and the weather may have taken a turn for the worse initially but let us rejoice that we do at last have some cricket to watch.
Below are some of the highlights from the First Test at Southampton.

  • Ben Stokes became England's 81st Test captain.
  • England's 204 is their lowest, completed total at Southampton in the four Tests played there to date. Their previous lowest was 246 against India in 2018.
  • Jason Holder's 6 for 42 is the best bowling by a West Indian captain against England in a Test surpassing John Goddard's 5 for 31 at Georgetown in 1947-48.
  • Holder's figures are not only his best in Test cricket but are also the best at Southampton overtaking Chris Tremlett's 6 for 48 against Sri Lanka in 2011.
  • England's 204 is the second occasion at Southampton where a side has been dismissed without registering an individual fifty. Sri Lanka's 184 in 2011 is the other occasion.
  • England failed to register an individual fifty in three Test innings in 2019. Their first innings at Southampton is their ninth-lowest Test total where eight batsmen have reached double figures but none has managed fifty.
  • Shannon Gabriel's match return of 9 for 137 is second only at Southampton to Moeen Ali's 9 for 134 for England against India in 2018.
  • Holder's match figures of 7 for 91 are the best by a captain at Southampton, marginally better than Stokes's 6 for 88.
  • The ten batsmen dismissed bowled in the test is a record at Southampton ahead of the seven in 2014 between England and India.
  • For the second time in his Test career, Shane Dowrich took six catches in a match as well as scoring a fifty. The last occasion this feat was achieved by a West Indian wicket-keeper was in 2000-01 by Ridley Jacobs.
  • The West Indian victory is only their third in England during this century.
