Fifth Test Highlights Australia VS. England, Sydney

  • Joe Root dew level with Ricky Ponting on 41 centuries whilst Steve Smith's 37th century saw him overtake Rahul Dravid and slot into 6th place in the all-time list of Test centurions.
  • Root's 160 is his second-highest score against Australia behind only his 180 at Lord's in 2013.
  • For the second series, Root scored two centuries. The other occasion was in 2015 but this is his first time in Australia after his maiden century in the country at Brisbane in the current series.
  • Smith's thirteenth Ashes century places him ahead of Jack Hobbs and in second place behind only Sir Donald Bradman (19).
  • Smith also overtook Hobbs's tally of 3636 Ashes runs and again goes second behind Bradman (5028).
  • The Australian innings saw the eighteenth occasion in Test cricket of the first five wickets in the same innings yielding 50 or more runs each. The only other occasion between the two sides was by Australia at Brisbane in 2006-07.
  • Australia had seven 50+ partnerships in their first innings, the second highest by any country behind only India's eight against England at The Oval in 2007.
  • Travis Head became the seventh Australian opener to score three centuries in an Ashes series joining Joe Darling, Bill Woodfull, Arthur Morris (twice), Bill Lawry, Michael Slater (twice) and Matthew Hayden. Hayden was the last Australian opener to do so, in 2002-03.
  • Head's 629 runs in the series is the ninth highest for Australia against England. The record is Sir Donald Bradman's 974 in England in 1930
  • Head's series aggregate of 608 runs as opener is the third highest for Australia against England. The record is Arthur Morris's 696 in 1948.
  • Jacob Bethell's maiden Test century is also his maiden First-class century. His score surpasses his previous best of 96 against New Zealand at Wellington in 2024-25.
  • Ben Stokes endured his second-worst Test batting with just one run over both innings. Based on batting and being dismissed twice, his only lower aggregate was when he made a pair against India at Lord's in 2014.
  • Mitchell Starc's 31 wickets in the series is the joint-tenth best by an Australia bowler against England. The list is headed by Terry Alderman (42) in a six-match series in 1981. Starc's performance is the joint-seventh best for Australia against England in Australia.
  • Usman Khawaja finished his Test career with 6229 runs, the fifteenth-highest total for Australia in their Test history.
  • Alex Carey's 28 dismissals in the series is the joint-second highest for Australia against all opposition. The record is Brad Haddin (29) against England in England in 2013. Carey's performance is therefore joint-top in Australia with Rodney Marsh (vs. England in 1982-83).
  • After a 400-run series (and England's most successful player), Root (2828) now stands fifth highest for England against Australia in overall runs.
  • The last occasion when England registered two individual scores of more than 150 in the same Test against Australia in Australia was at Adelaide in 2006-07. Paul Collingwood made 206 and Kevin Pietersen 158 but England also lost that match.
