England VS. South Africa First Test Highlights, Lord's

  • South Africa's win is their sixth at Lords: five have been since 1994 and, during this period of seven Tests, they have only lost one of these matches.
  • South Africa became the first team to twice beat England by an innings at Lord's. West Indies and Australia have done so once.
  • For their eleventh time at Lord's, England had only one fifty partnership in the match. Only one of these occasions has been when England have batted only once in the match.
  • Kagiso Rabada became the twelfth South African bowler to take five wickets in an innings at Lord's. His figures of 5-52 are the seventh-best for South Africa at Lord's.
  • Rabada also became the seventh South African bowler to take 250 Test wickets.
  • For only the second time in his Test career, Joe Root failed to reach double figures in both innings of a Lord's Test. The only other occasion was against Sri Lanka in 2016.
  • Jonny Bairstow reached 1000 runs in a year for the second time, the previous time being in 2016.
  • For their seventh time at Lord's, there were thirteen (or more) instances of players not reaching double figures in the match for England. Their record is 18 against Australia in 1888.
  • England's match aggregate of 314 runs is their second-worst at Lords (based on losing all twenty wickets). Their worst is 115 against Australia in 1888. In 1994, also against South Africa, England managed only 279 runs in the match with Darren Gough retired hurt in the second innings.
  • England's 496 balls faced in the match is also their second-fewest at Lords (in a match where they lost all twenty wickets), behind only the 1888 Test against Australia in which they faced 388. It is their third-lowest at all grounds, Lord's in 1888 and Ahmedabad in 2020-21 (476 balls) being above the most recent match although there have been three further occasions where they have lost fewer than twenty wickets because of absentees.
  • The match aggregate of 1031 balls is the third-lowest in a Test at Lord's with a result. The fewest is 792 (in 1888) followed by 1023 (England vs. India in 2018). The Ireland Test in 2019 lasted only 1053 balls, the fourth-shortest.
  • For the eleventh occasion at Lord's, England had only one fifty in the match in which they had lost all twenty wickets.
