England VS. Sri Lanka Third Test Highlights, The Oval

  • The loss of their last seven wickets for 64 runs in their first innings is not the first occasion of England doing so against Sri Lanka. They lost exactly the same number of wickets for the same number of runs at Colombo in 1992-93. This Test is far from being England's worst (based on losing their last seven wickets from a score of 250 or more), their worst being 298 for 3 to 320 all out against Pakistan at Headingley in 1992.
  • England lost their last seven wickets for 90 runs in the second innings (as well as their first seven for 83). The last occasion when they lost their last seven wickets in both innings of the same Test for fewer than 100 runs in England was against South Africa at Trent Bridge in 2017. It has happened on numerous occasions overseas during the interim period.
  • Ollie Pope became the fifth England captain to score 150 or more in an innings at The Oval. The highest remains Ted Dexter's 172 against Pakistan in 1962 whilst the most recent was Mike Gatting's unbeaten 150, also against Pakistan, in 1987.
  • England's first innings 325 is their fifth-lowest total at The Oval where there has been one century and one fifty with every other score being under fifty. In the same circumstances, England's 295 in 1907 against South Africa is their lowest.
  • England's first innings saw their first occasion against Sri Lanka of their losing all ten wickets to catches. There have been four previous occasions of nine including both innings of the recently-concluded Lord's Test.
  • England's second innings 156 is their lowest completed total against Sri Lanka in England. Their previous lowest was 181, also at The Oval, in 1998.
  • For the first time in their Test history, three Sri Lankan players were dismissed with scores in the 60s with no other player going on beyond 70 in a completed innings. The last occasion that this happened was by England against India, also at The Oval, in 2007.
  • In the Test, England had eighteen scores of under 20. This is their most in a Test against Sri Lanka surpassing the seventeen at Colombo in 2003-04. Their most against any country is twenty-one against New Zealand at Christchurch in 1983-84.
  • Of this number above, twelve were in single figures, their second most against Sri Lanka where their most remains fourteen at Galle in 2000-01. Their highest against any country is eighteen against Australia at Lord's in 1888.
  • Pathum Nissanka became the sixth Sri Lankan to score a fifty and a century in the same Test against England. He joins Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene (both twice), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Russel Arnold and Duleep Mendis in achieving the feat.
  • Joe Root's 375 runs in the series is the third highest by an England player against Sri Lanka behind only Sir Alastair Cook (390 in 2011) and Jonny Bairstow (387 in 2016).
  • Sri Lanka's win is their fourth in England and their second at The Oval following their victory there in 1998. Their other wins have been at Headingley in 2014 and Trent Bridge in 2006.
