England VS. Sri Lanka Second Test Highlights, Lord's
- Joe Root’s first innings 143 was his 33rd Test century which drew him level with Sir Alastair Cook’s England record whilst his second innings 103 made him England’s most prolific centurion. This is the first time that Root has scored centuries in each innings of the same Test.
- Root becomes the fourth cricketer to score centuries in both innings of the same Lord’s Test joining George Headley in 1939, Graham Gooch in 1990 and Michael Vaughan in 2004.
- Root also became the highest Test-runs scorer at Lord’s (2022), surpassing Graham Gooch’s 2015.
- Root also held his 200th Test catch and joins Jacques Kallis, Mahela Jayawardena and Rahul Dravid as the only non-wicket-keepers to achieve the feat.
- Root has also overtaken Cook’s catching record at Lord’s. He has now held 29 catches to Cook’s 28.
- Gus Atkinson became only the third player to score a century and take five wickets in an innings during the same Lord’s Test. Previously, Vinoo Mankad (184 and 5-196 for India vs. England at Lord’s) and Sir Ian Botham (108 and 8-34 vs. Pakistan in 1978) had performed the feat.
- Atkinson became the first English number 8 to score a century and take five wickets in an innings of the same Test. Others to also do so are Sohag Gazi (Bangladesh), Paul Strang (Zimbabwe), Ravichandran Ashwin (India) twice and Bruce Taylor (New Zealand), on Test debut.
- Atkinson also became the fourth player at number 8 to score their maiden Test century at Lord’s. He joins Ray Illingworth, Bernard Julian and Ajit Agarkar in doing so.
- Kamindu Mendis’s fine start to his Test career continues and, after five Tests, he has now scored 631 runs, the third highest at this stage of a Test career with only George Headley (714) and Sunil Gavaskar (831) having scored more at the same stage.
- Asitha Fernando became only the second Sri Lankan bowler to take five wickets in an innings at Lord’s. Rumesh Ratnayake did so in 1991.
- For the first time in a Test held in England, three completed innings all featured nine dismissals to catches.
- The only other occasion of this happening in any Test was between New Zealand and Pakistan at Auckland in 1993-94.
- The 32 dismissals in the Test to catches is the most at Lord’s surpassing the 30 in 1971 between England and India.
- For the first time in a Lord’s Test, the batting entries of four players were the same (but not scores) in both innings. Dan Lawrence and Dinesh Chandimal fell to the same combination whilst Shoaib Bashir and Asitha Fernando were both not out.
- Olly Stone became the second bowler after Ravi Shastri in 1990 to bowl a minimum of 25 overs in a Lord’s Test without a maiden over. The last such occasion in England was by Sachin Tendulkar at The Oval in 2007.
- For the first occasion at Lord’s, one team (in this case, England) lost all twenty wickets without one player being bowled. There have been other occasions of a side losing fewer than their twenty wickets in the match without one dismissal bowled.
