Australia vs. England First Test Highlights, Brisbane

  • Rory Burns became the third English player to be dismissed by the first ball of an Ashes Test following Archie MacLaren (at Melbourne in 1894-95) and Stan Worthington (at Brisbane in 1936-37).
  • Burns, like Worthington, was out to the first ball of an Ashes series.
  • In total, the fate of being dismissed by the first ball has now occurred on 34 occasions. It has happened on six occasions to Englishmen whilst, of the 34 times, Burns is the seventh to be dismissed bowled.
  • Pat Cummins became the twelfth captain to take five wickets in his first innings as captain. Only one other Australian captain, George Giffen (vs. England at Melbourne in 1894-95) has achieved the feat. Cummins's analysis (5 for 38) is the ninth best with Imran Khan's 7 for 52 (vs. England at Birmingham in 1982) heading the list.
  • Cummins's match analysis of 7 for 89 is the best by an Australian captain on debut, and the eleventh best in total. The list is headed by Waqar Younis's 13 for 135 vs. Zimbabwe at Karachi in 1993-94.
  • Travis Head's 85-ball century is the third-quickest in Ashes history, the record (57) being held by Adam Gilchrist at Perth in 2006-07. The quickest in Test cricket is Brendon McCullum's 54 balls for New Zealand against Australia at Christchurch in 2015-16.
  • Jack Leach's economy rate of 7.85 runs/over gives him an unwanted record (based on a minimum of 60 balls) of the highest economy rate per over by an English bowler against all opposition. Previously, Bob Willis's 14-1-99-1 (7.07 runs/over) against West Indies at Manchester in 1980 had been the highest. The highest by any player is 8.86 by Pakistan's Yasir Shah with 14-0-124-1 against Australia at Sydney in 2016-17.
  • The third wicket partnership of 162 between Dawid Malan and Joe Root is an English record for that wicket at Brisbane, surpassing the 160 between Graeme Hick and Graham Thorpe in 1994-95.
  • Nathan Lyon became the third Australian bowler after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to take 400 Test wickets. He is the seventeenth player in total to record this number.
  • Alex Carey became the second Australian wicket-keeper, after Brian Taber against South Africa at Johannesburg in 1966-67, to make eight dismissals on debut. Three players have achieved this feat, the other being Chris Read for England vs. New Zealand at Birmingham in 1999.
  • For the third time in their history at Brisbane's 'Gabba, there were eighteen dismissals to catches for England. Their most is 19 - which is also their highest against all opposition - in 1982-83 whilst their only other occasion of losing eighteen to catches was at Lord's against West Indies in 1973.
  • Jos Buttler became the first England wicket-keeper to be twice dismissed by the Australian wicket-keeper in both innings of the same Test, the fate having also befallen him at Lord's in 2015. The same has occurred once to Godfrey Evans, Alan Knott and Matt Prior.
  • For the fourth time for England in Australia, the two top scorers in an innings were both dismissed in the 80s. This was the first time, though, that in such circumstances, England lost the Test.
  • Joe Root became the highest scoring England player in a calendar year when he overtook Michael Vaughan's 1481 runs in 2002. Root has now scored 1544 runs in 2021.
  • Root's tally above is the joint seventh-highest by any player. The record is 1788 by Mohammad Yousuf in 2006.
  • Root also lies joint third for most runs by a captain in a calendar year, the record being held by South Africa's Graeme Smith (1656) in 2008.
