Fifth Test Highlights England VS. India, The Oval

Congratulations to both sides on producing one of the most enthralling series in more recent memory and one which was decided in a most nail-biting finish.

  • Shubman Gill became the second Indian captain and eleventh in total to lose the toss in his first five Tests. The other Indian captain to do so was Kapil Dev.
  • Ravindra Jadeja's 516 runs in the series is the fifth highest by a player batting between 6 to 11. It is the best by an Indian player and the highest by any player is 722 by Sir Garfield Sobers for West Indies against England in 1966.
  • Akash Deep's second innings 66 is the second-highest score by an Indian nightwatchman behind only Amit Mishra's 84 against England, also at The Oval, in 2011. It is India's third fifty by a nightwatchman.
  • Deep's score is also the highest by a nightwatchman at The Oval surpassing Derek Underwood's 43 for England against Pakistan in 1974.
  • Gill sandwiched himself between Sunil Gavaskar for the second-highest number of runs scored in a series for India. Gill's 754 runs places him second behind Gavaskar's 774 against West Indies in 1970-71 with Gavaskar's 732 in 1978-79, also against West Indies, being pushed down to third place.
  • Gill's total is, though, the highest by an Indian captain overtaking Gavaskar's tally against West Indies in 1978-79.
  • Gill's series aggregate is second only to Sir Donald Bradman's 810 for Australia against England in 1936-37 by a captain.
  • Six Indian players have now scored 500+ runs in a series in England with three (Shubman Gill, Lokesh Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja) doing so in this series.
  • The four players - Joe Root being the other - scoring 500 runs in the series is the most by both sides in any series between the two sides.
  • The six occasions of two or more hundreds in an innings is the most by both sides in an England vs. India Test series. There were five in the 2016-17 series.
  • The twelve lbws in the match is the second highest at The Oval behind only fourteen between England and West Indies in 2000.
  • The last England player, after Harry Brook's 53 and 111 in this match, to score a century and a fifty in the same Test at The Oval was Sir Alastair Cook, also against India, in 2018.
  • For the first time since 2017-18 against Australia, England played a five-Test series where every match lasted until the fifth day.
  • The last such time where an England & India five-Test series had play on every playing day was in 1984-85.
  • The last series where this happened in England was against Australia in 1993 where all six Tests lasted until the final day.
  • India's six-run win is the closest by runs at The Oval. The nearest had previously been Australia's seven-run win against England in 1882.
  • India's win is also their narrowest by runs surpassing their 13-run win over Australia at Mumbai in 2004-05.
  • India's win is the third-closest by runs by a team which lost the toss and was asked to bat first. The closest was England's two-run win over Australia at Edgbaston in 2005 followed by another England win over Australia (three runs) at Melbourne in 1982-83.
  • England's defeat is their closest by runs after inserting the opposition and failing to achieve their fourth-innings target. Previously, their closest defeat was 28 runs to South Africa at Old Wanderers in 1930-31.
  • India's third victory at The Oval draws them level with Lord's as their most successful ground in England.
  • England's loss after winning the toss and fielding and then failing to reach their fourth-innings target has comparisons with two other Tests in which they were handily placed during or before the fourth innings. In this recently-concluded Test, England's last seven wickets fell for 66 with their target 73 at the time that the fourth wicket fell. Against New Zealand in Wellington in 1977-78, England had a victory target of 137 but were dismissed for 64. Also against New Zealand, but at The Oval in 1999, they required 246 and were 143 for 3 before folding for 162.
  • Mohammad Siraj's match analysis of 9 for 190 is the best by an Indian bowler at The Oval. Previously, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar's 8 for 114 in 1971 was the best.
  • The 195-run stand between Root and Brook for England's fourth wicket in the second innings is the highest partnership for that wicket in a losing team at The Oval. The previous highest was 144 by Sachin Tendulkar and Amit Mishra for India against England in 2011.
  • The England second innings saw only the seventh occasion of a losing side recording two centuries in the fourth innings of a match. The most recent time was by India, also at The Oval, in 2018.
  • England's victory target of 374 is the highest by a side which ultimately failed by fewer than 10 runs.
