England VS. Sri Lanka First Test Highlights, Old Trafford
- Sri Lanka's 6 for 3 is the joint-sixteenth worst start to a Test match at the fall of the third wicket. It is also the joint eighth-worst by a side winning the toss and electing to bat. There have been two occasions of a side losing their first three wickets in the first innings of a Test before a run has been scored (Zimbabwe vs. Sri Lanka at Harare in 1999-2000 and Pakistan vs. India at Karachi in 2005-06. The worst by a side winning the toss is 2 for 3 by England vs. South Africa at Cape Town in 1909-10.
- Sri Lanka's start is the fourth worst at the fall of the third wicket at Old Trafford (in any match innings) behind 1 for 3 by Australia vs. England in 1888; 5 for 3 by India vs. England in 1952 and 5 for 3 also, again by India vs. England in 1946.
- Milan Rathnayake's 72 is the highest debut innings score by a number 9 surpassing Balwinder Sandhu's 71 for India vs. Pakistan at Hyderabad in 1982-83.
- Sri Lanka's first innings 236 is their second time against England that their last three wickets have yielded more than 100 further runs after losing their first seven for fewer than 150. The previous occasion was at Trent Bridge in 2006.
- For the second successive Test at Old Trafford, an England innings contained four fifty partnerships.
- For only the third occasion, a Sri Lankan innings contained fifty partnerships for both the eighth and ninth wickets. The previous occasions were against England at Galle in 2011-12 and against Bangladesh at Colombo in 2016-17. This is therefore their first instance away from Sri Lanka.
- Kamindu Mendis became the Sri Lankan number 7 to score a century against England.
- After four Tests, Mendis has scored 553 runs, the most by a Sri Lankan player after this number of Tests. The next successful was Upul Tharanga with 418. Mendis's total to date is the fifth best by any international player behind only Javed Miandad (573), Conrad Hunte (577), George Headley (703) and Sunil Gavaskar (774) at the same stage.
- Angelo Mathews became the third Sri Lankan player after Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara to score 1000 runs against England.
- Jamie Smith's maiden Test century is the first by an England wicket-keeper against Sri Lanka since Ben Foakes at Galle in 2018-19.
- The partnership of 117 between Kamindu Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal is the second highest for the seventh wicket for Sri Lanka against England and their highest in England. The highest is 183 between Mahele Jayawardene and Chaminda Vaas at Galle in 2007-08.
- Joe Root finished the Test with 978 runs at Old Trafford and needs just 22 to become the first player to score 1000 at the ground.
- Sri Lanka's second innings 326 is the highest third innings of a Test total at Old Trafford since 2000 when West Indies made 438 for 7.
- Joe Root's match-winning, unbeaten 62 in the England second innings is only the second occasion that he has made over 50 with no more than two boundaries. Against Australia at Sydney in 2017-18, he made 58* with just a single boundary.
