WORLD CUP MATCHES 31, 32 and 33

MATCH 31 BANGLADESH VS. AFGHANISTAN AT SOUTHAMPTON

  • Shakib al Hasan's 5 for 29 is the first occasion of a Bangladeshi bowler taking five wickets in a World Cup match.
  • Shakib became the second player after Yuvraj Singh to score a fifty and take five wickets in a World Cup match.
  • Shakib's further triumph was to become the first Bangladeshi batsman to score 1000 World Cup runs.
  • Bangladesh's 262 for 7 is the highest World Cup total at Southampton's current ground. In the 1983 and 1999 tournaments, Southampton's Northlands ground was used.
  • For only the second time in their World Cup history, six Bangladeshi bowlers conceded fewer than 50 runs each in a completed opposition total of 200 or more. The other occasion was against England at Chittagong in 2011.

MATCH 32 ENGLAND VS. AUSTRALIA AT LORD'S

  • The 123-run stand between Aaron Finch and David Warner is the fourth opening century partnership by a team which has lost the toss and been inserted. Finch and Warner also collaborated in another such partnership.
  • Finch's second century of the tournament makes him the second Australian captain to record two centuries in the same World Cup tournament. Ricky Ponting did so in 2003.
  • Warner's 53 made him the first batsman to score 500 runs in this competition.
  • Finch became the first captain since Clive Lloyd in 1975 to score a World Cup century at Lord's.
  • Jason Behrendorff became the second Australian after Gary Gilmour in 1975 to take five wickets in a World Cup match at Lord's.

MATCH 33 NEW ZEALAND VS. PAKISTAN AT EDGBASTON

  • The 132-run partnership between James Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme is New Zealand's highest for the sixth wicket. The previous best was 91 between Kane Williamson and de Grandhomme against South Africa, also at Edgbaston in 2019.
  • Neesham's unbeaten 97 is the highest World Cup score by a New Zealand number 6. Martin Crowe also made 97 against England at The Oval in 1983 but was dismissed.
  • For the fifth time in their World Cup history, New Zealand used eight bowlers in an innings.
  • Kane Williamson bowled for only the fourth time in his World Cup career of 19 matches and took his first wicket.
