INDIA VS. ENGLAND FOURTH TEST HIGHLIGHTS, AHMEDABAD

  • For their 23rd time, and their fifth time in India, England lost five batsmen lbw in one innings.
  • The 25 wickets which England lost to lbws in the series is the second-highest in a four-Test series. Previously, West Indies lost 27 to Australia in 1998-99.
  • Axar Patel's first three Tests brought him 27 wickets which places him joint-third highest at that stage of a Test career. Only Narendra Hirwani (31) and Australia's Charlie Turner (29) have taken more wickets in their first three Tests.
  • Only Rodney Hogg, also with 27 wickets in his first three Tests, has more five-wicket hauls in an innings (5) at the same stage. Patel, like Turner above, has four. Vernon Philander and England's Tom Richardson also have four.
  • For only the second time in their Test history, England lost every available wicket in a four-Test series. The last such occasion was against West Indies in England in 1950.
  • For the first time in their Test history, England went through six successive, completed innings without a fifty partnership. Their previous worst such drought was over five innings between 26 February 1887 and 13 August 1888. They added the seventh in the second innings.
  • England's 15 ducks in the series is their second-most in a four-Test series, the highest being 16 against West Indies in 1950. This number is also their highest in a series against India surpassing the 11 in both 2016-17 and 2018.
  • India's 16 series ducks is their joint-second most in a four-Test series. Their highest is 20 against England in 1952.
  • England's batting milestones in the series (1 hundred & five fifties) is their joint-second lowest in a four-Test series. Their lowest ( 1 & 4) was against West Indies in 1934-35 whilst the same (1 & 5) was also recorded against Australia in 1882-83 whilst, against New Zealand in 1999, six fifties and no hundreds were registered.
  • England's first innings 205 is their third-highest, completed total against India without a 50 partnership. Their highest is 236 at Mohali in 2016-17 whilst their highest against all opposition is 255 against New Zealand at Headingley in 2015.
  • Ravichandran Ashwin's 32 wickets in the series is the fourth best in a four-Test series, and the best by an Indian bowler.
  • Ashwin also became the fifth cricketer (and first in a four-Test series) to score a century and take 30 or more wickets. Geoff Giffin and Richie Benaud, both from Australia, Sir Ian Botham and Imran Khan are the others.
  • Rishabh Pant became the sixteenth wicket-keeper to make a century and effect two stumpings in a Test. The last occasion was by Quinton de Kock for South Africa against India at Visakhapatnam in 2019-20 whilst the last Indian player was Budhi Kunderan against England at Madras (Corporation Ground) in 1963-64.
  • India's 365 is their highest total where four (or more) batsmen have scored ducks. Their previous best was 329 in this same series at Chennai during the Second Test (where, strangely, three of the four batsmen were the same as at Ahmedabad).
  • England's series run aggregate of 1587 is their sixth-lowest in a four-Test series. Their lowest is 1281 against West Indies in 1934-35.
  • In the England second innings, two Indian bowlers shared five wickets each in the same innings for the sixth time in their Test history. The last occasion was also against England, at Bombay in 1981-82.
  • The series saw three batsmen fall to the same bowler in three or more consecutive innings: Rohit Sharma to Jack Leach (4); Jack Leach to Ravichandran Ashwin (4) and Dom Sibley to Axar Patel (3).
