England Vs. India Second Test Highlights

I was very fortunate to spend the last four days of the recent Lord's Test watching an absorbing match live. In twenty years of watching international cricket at Lord's, this match ranks, to me, as one of the most exciting and fluctuating and, considering the difficulties with Coronavirus over the last eighteen months, I consider myself very lucky to have witnessed such a remarkable game. Congratulations to India on going 1-0 up in the series, their third victory at Lord's.

  • India's 376 is their highest first innings total against England in England after losing the toss and being asked to bat. Their previous highest was 329 at Trent Bridge in 2018.
  • India's total is their second-highest against England under the same circumstances. Their highest is 481 for 4 at Madras in 1981-82.
  • India's opening partnership of 126 is their highest in England after being asked to bat in the first innings of a Test. There have been two instances of 62, in their inaugural Test match at Lord's in 1936 and more latterly in the World Test Championship final against New Zealand at Southampton. There have been eleven instances of India scoring a century partnership for the first wicket in the first innings of a Test after being asked to bat.
  • India's total is their third-lowest to include two century partnerships after being asked to bat first. Their lowest in these circumstances is 323 against England at Nagpur in 2005-06.
  • K.L. Rahul's 397-minute 129 is the second-longest innings at Lord's by an Indian player, behind only Saurav Ganguly's 434-minute 131 in 1996.
  • James Anderson's seventh five-wicket haul in an innings leaves him one behind Ian Botham's record of eight.
  • Joe Root's first innings unbeaten 180 is the eighth highest score by a captain at Lord's. Graham Gooch's 333 against India in 1990 leads the way.
  • Root's innings is the second-highest, unbeaten innings by a captain at Lord's and is second only to Hanif Mohammad's 187* against England in 1967.
  • Root's innings is the tenth longest at Lord's. Sri Lanka's Sidath Wettimuny's 642-minute 190 in 1984 is the longest.
  • Root's feat of top-scoring in both innings is the seventh occasion by a captain at Lord's. Root is the fifth English captain to do so with three previously also performing the feat against India, whilst Allan Border and Mahela Jayawardene did so against England.
  • Root overtook Graham Gooch to become England's second-highest Test scorer and also reached 9000 Test runs, the second English player to do so and the sixteenth in total.
  • Root also became the fourth player to score 2000 runs in Tests between England and India. Root also became the third captain to register 1000 runs between the two sides.
  • Root's innings is the highest by a captain in England in a losing cause, and the fourth highest in all Tests.
  • Mohammed Siraj's match analysis of 8 for 126 is the best for India at Lord's, eclipsing Kapil Dev's 8 for 168 in 1982.
  • Ishant Sharma joined Kapil Dev and Bishan Singh Bedi on 17 wickets at Lord's, the most by Indian bowlers.
  • The unbeaten partnership of 89 between Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah is the highest for the ninth wicket for India in England surpassing the 66 between Kapil Dev and Syed Madan Lal in 1982, also at Lord's.
  • Both Shami (56*) and Bumrah (34*) registered their highest Test scores.
  • Shami's innings is the ninth fifty for India by a number 9 in England. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has performed the feat on three occasions.
  • The England second innings saw the sixth time where both England openers have been dismissed for ducks. It is their first occasion in England, and their first time against India.
  • Sam Curran became the first player to register a king pair at Lords, being dismissed by his first ball of each innings.
  • Curran is the third batsman to record a king pair for England. The others are William Attewell against Australia at Sydney in 1891/92, and James Anderson against India at Visakhapatnam in 2016/17.
  • The match is the third at Lord's where three golden ducks have been registered. The previous were both between England and West Indies, in 1963 and 2009.
  • The match saw the seventh occasion of England recording three golden ducks in the same match.
  • James Anderson's third pair in Tests makes him joint top for England with four other players. Anderson's pair is also the 100th in all Tests for England.
  • For the fifth time in their Test history, two (or more) England players recorded pairs in the same match. There have been four occasions of two (vs. Australia at Perth in 1994-95; vs. South Africa at Johannesburg in 1999-2000 and vs. West Indies at Edgbaston in 2000 and the recently-concluded match), and once of three (vs. Australia at Adelaide in 1974-75).
  • Rory Burns's five ducks (in 12 innings) in the current season is the most by an England opener in one season. Dom Sibley has also registered four in the current season (in 20 innings) and lies equal with Michael Atherton in the 1998-99 season. Burns's dismissals have all been in the first over of the innings.
  • Haseeb Hameed returned to the side after a gap of 56 Tests, the 19th longest by an England player. The time gap, though, of 4 years and 254 days puts him only 71st in terms of days between Tests.
  • Cheteshwar Pujara's second innings 45 is the second-longest innings by balls faced (206) at Lord's where a batsman has been dismissed for under 50. Glenn Turner's unbeaten 43 in 226 balls for New Zealand in 1969 heads the list.
  • Based on batting for a minimum of 200 minutes, Pujara's scoring rate of 9.64 runs per hour is the slowest by an Indian batsman at Lord's. Pujara's innings is the fifth-slowest at Lord's, the record being held by David Gower (8.49 runs per hour) during his 29 in 205 minutes against Pakistan in 1982.
  • England's seven ducks in the match is their joint-most in a Test. This is the fifth occasion at Lord's, and England's first in England.
  • The four ducks in England's second innings is their fifth such at Lord's, and their second this season.
  • England's 120 is their fourth-lowest, fourth innings of a match total at Lord's where they have lost.
